COVID-19 Update – B.C. Extends Temporary Layoff Period to 24 Weeks

In a statement released today by the B.C. provincial government, Minister of Labour Harry Bains announced that the maximum temporary layoff period has been extended to 24 weeks. Previously the maximum temporary layoff period had been 16 weeks if the layoff was due to COVID-19.

Earlier in the week, the federal government had announced it was temporarily extending the time period given to employers to recall employees laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these changes only apply to jobs within the federally-regulated private sector. Read the press release here.
